The Walker Family

A native of Burundi in central Africa, Liliane Walker came to this country with high hopes for a better life. After her dreams were dashed by a rough and abusive marriage and poverty, she often listened to her friend from her church talk about her Habitat home.

Moving from shelter to shelter with her four children and even enduring a time when the family lived in their car, Liliane persevered to create a new life for her family. With help from volunteers and donors, Liliane achieved the American dream of homeownership. Her family has since thrived. She is now most proud of a son attending college, the first in her family. For Liliane, Habitat built hope and Habitat built dignity.
